The kitchen is the most important room in the house, and its cleanliness will determine the hygiene of the home. This is where germs can easily breed leading to infections.
For various reasons, the kitchen sink will clog prompting urgent attention. Before planning to focus on the kitchen sink, it should be ruled out that clogging is not resulting from the main drainage. This is evident if other drains in the house are affected. A kitchen sink has a trap which is useful in that it prevents bad smell from the main sewer from getting back to the house.
Ways to unclog your clogged kitchen sink
Use of boiling water
Remove any standing water in the sink then pour boiling water. This will mainly address the issue of clogging if it is caused by grease or fat. Over continuous use, grease will accumulate in the trap and cling to the inside edges thus narrowing the space through which water passes. It reaches a time when the trap is completely blocked and stops draining water. Hot water will melt the grease, allowing it to flow with water.
Remove any visible food particles
Food particles will prevent or slow down the flow of water making its usage difficult. Removing these from the sink is the simplest way to unclog the sink.
Use a metal wire
You can also remove the particles using a metal wire by pushing or pulling them to allow free flow of water. This way the particles will be pushed and clear the sink drain.
Use of caustic detergents
These detergents help to break down grease and fat in the sink. Fat and grease are the leading cause of clogging in the sinks. The above methods are only temporal, and it is noted that the problem is likely to reoccur.
Cleaning the trap
This method involves physically removing the clogs from the sink. Firstly, place a bucket under the sink so that any dirt coming out will be collected. Loosen the fastenings carefully not to use too much force that will damage the connecting pipes. Remove the trap and clean it thoroughly with warm water, a detergent, and a brush. Inspect the trap arm and if necessary, also clean it. Pay special attention to the threads. Reassemble the sink taking note that the threads are aligned properly. Pour water in the sink to test for any leakage before commissioning it for use.
Using a plunger
Place a plunger inside the sink over the open part, and then plunge a few times. Pour water into the sink and repeat the process. The vacuum created while plunging should be able to clear any blockage in the sink. For better results, pour hot water in the sink before plunging.
Besides dealing with an already clogged sink, it is wise always to try to prevent your sink from getting clogged. These ways will help you clear your sink when it gets clogged.
